Many Catholic pastors and youth ministers are concerned with the poor showing of Catholic teens in the National Study of Youth and Religion (NSYR). With funding from NSYR and the Louisville Institute, Instituto Fe y Vida has published Pathways of Hope and Faith Among Hispanic Teens. This book has more than sixty research-based recommendations for making youth ministry and faith formation programs more effective.
The book focuses on Hispanics—a large, quickly growing, and underserved part of the young Catholic Church. It provides a map for overcoming the historical, cultural, and structural obstacles to their participation in youth ministry programs. A multidisciplinary and ecumenical team of nine writers presents new findings from the NSYR in 49 tables, 64 excerpts from interview conversations, and 18 charts, maps, and diagrams.
Each chapter also includes a theological/pastoral reflection on the data, questions for reflection and discussion, and a list of additional resources. The final chapter offers an overall summary of the findings regarding Hispanic Catholic teens and identifies ten factors that need to be addressed in our church to provide a more comprehensive outreach to them.
