'Round the Regions

Region 11 News

It was with great sadness that Region 11 said goodbye to Evelyn Gonzalez this past spring. Evelyn had been the director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry in the Diocese of Oakland for many years. She left this position to spend more time with her family. She will be greatly missed in our region and has added much to the field of youth ministry. Best of luck Evelyn!

NFCYM Regions with Focus on Region 1The annual Region 11 Meeting was held September 28—October 1 in Santa Cruz, California. It was an exciting meeting. Our region discerned a new representative to the NFCYM Board of Directors–it will be Yvette Espinoza of the Diocese of Oakland. Congratulations to Yvette. We also took time with Sr. Mary Greenan F.M.A. for a half day retreat on Mysticism and Ministry. Sr. Mary is a member of the Salesian Sisters Congregation and an adjunct faculty member of the Dominican School at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkley. It was a great time for our region to reflect on the balance between action and contemplation–especially in the world of youth ministry. Ken Johnson-Mondragon from Instituto Fe y Vida led us through an in-service on Youth Ministry Formation in a Multicultural Church. It was an enlightening day that will be a focus for our region in the years to come. We were lucky to have Ken with us!

It was exciting to welcome our newest members of the region to our annual meeting. It was great to have Michelle Mack (Diocese of Orange), Julie Nagasako (Diocese of Honolulu), Kathy Cho (Diocese of San Bernardino), Theresa Thibodeaux (Archdiocese of Los Angeles), and Anelita Reyes (Archdiocese of San Francisco). These new faces, along with our veteran members, added a lot to the meeting. We would like everyone to know that the ministry is alive and kicking out here on the west coast!
