2007 NCYC--Theme Song Sought

 

The 2007 National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) is still months away, but the search for a theme song begins. Submissions of original music are sought for consideration by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry’s Youth Events Management Committee. The theme for the 2007 NCYC is Discover the Way/Descubre El Camino. As in the past, each general session has a specific focus.

General Session 1 – Discover the Way
General Session 2 – Discover the Truth
General Session 3 – Discover the Life

The scriptural reference for the themes is John 14:4-6a:

"Where I am going, you know the Way." Thomas said to him, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life..."

 

The selected song will be used as the anthem for the whole conference. The song should be catchy, moving, and use language that speaks to today’s young people. The lyrics should relate to the conference theme, as well as the general session themes, and perhaps contain key words or phrases from the Scriptural references. The song should be melodic, easy to pick up, and adaptable (could be played at a variety of tempos). Use of other languages is encouraged. Composers should keep in mind that the song will be used in a variety of settings, including liturgy.

 

Submissions must include a recording of the song with a lyric sheet (including the melody line and chords) and a cover letter containing contact information for the composer(s). Submissions must be received no later than 4 p.m. EDT on Friday, September 8, 2006. Email submissions with an mp3 file attachment are strongly preferred, but songs may be sent to the NFCYM office with a compact disk recording (no cassettes).

 

Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the Youth Events Management Committee in September. Selected submissions will be forwarded to a committee of youth from the Diocese of Columbus for selection of the final song. The process should be completed and applicants notified of final decision by October 15, 2006. The selected song will debut at the 2006 National Conference on Catholic Youth Ministry in Las Vegas on Sunday, December 3, 2006.

 

Please note that the NFCYM must have the right to use or perform the selected song in any format at any time without the need for permission from or compensation paid to the composer or other copyright holder. If the finalist cannot meet these conditions, then another song may be selected.
