NCYC Theme Song Contest
Introduction
The Youth Events Management Committee of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry is in search of a theme song for its 2009 National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) to be held in Kansas City, November 19-21.
Conference Themes
The theme for the conference is Christ Reigns. The general sessions will be themed around the following statements:
- Friday Morning: Christ Reigns in Us
- Friday Evening: Christ Reigns Among Us
- Saturday Morning: Christ Reigns Through Us
Scriptural References
The following Scriptures have been chosen to support each of the themes:
Christ Reigns: Revelation 11:15
The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.
Christ Reigns in Us: 1 Thessalonians 2:12
Lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
Christ Reigns Among Us: 1 Peter 4:8-11
Above all hold unfailing your love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins. Practice hospitality ungrudgingly to one another. As each has received a gift, employ it for one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who utters oracles of God; whoever renders service, as one who renders it by the strength which God supplies; in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Christ Reigns Through Us: 1 Peter 2:21
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
Criteria for Composition
The selected song will be used as the anthem for the whole conference. The song should be catchy, moving, and use language that speaks to young people. The lyrics should relate to the conference theme, as well as the general session themes, and perhaps contain key words or phrases from the Scriptural references. The song should be melodic, easy to pick up, and adaptable (could be played at a variety of tempos). Use of other languages is encouraged. Composers should keep in mind that the song will be used in a variety of settings, including liturgy.
Criteria for Submission
Email submissions with an mp3 (or similar) file attachment are strongly preferred, but songs may be submitted on compact disk (no cassettes), which will not be returned.
Submissions may be sent to ncyc@nfcym.org with NCYC Theme Song in the reference line. (Disk submissions may be mailed to the address below.)
Submissions must be received no later than 4 p.m. EDT on Friday, June 13, 2008.
Submissions must include:
- A recording of the song (mp3 or similar file format)
- A lyric sheet with score (including melody line and chords)
- Cover email/letter containing contact information (name, full mailing address, email address, and daytime telephone number/cell phone number) for the composer(s).
Selection Process
All submissions received by the deadline will be reviewed and evaluated by the Youth Events Management Committee. Selected submissions will be forwarded to a committee of youth from the Kansas City area for selection of the final song. The process should be completed and applicants notified of final decision by August 29, 2008.
Use of Selected Song
The selected song will be used in the promotional video for the 2009 NCYC which will be distributed to all diocesan directors of youth ministry this fall. In addition, the successful composer will be invited to perform the song live at the 2008 National Conference on Catholic Youth Ministry in Cleveland, Ohio, on Sunday, December 6, 2008.
Please note that the NFCYM must have the right to use or perform the selected song in any format at any time without the need for permission from or compensation paid to the composer or other copyright holder. If the finalist cannot meet these conditions, then another song may be selected.
